Trevor Phillips launches EACH's new web service to tackle homophobic bullying

in

Trevor Phillips, Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, joined the anti-homophobia charity EACH (Educational Action Challenging Homophobia) and Stephen Williams MP on Thursday 27th November 2008 at the national launch of EACH’s Online Reporting Service for young people targeted by homophobic bullying or harassment.

Guests attending the launch at the Houses of Parliament included education professionals who meet this problem daily, businesses who support equality of opportunity and who are keen to invest in communities and talent for the future, MPs from the three main political parties, and partners of the charity working to tackle bullying and persecution.

In a powerful and supportive speech, Trevor Phillips acknowledged that homophobic bullying is never banter nor ever fun. He cited a number of bodies who need to keep this form of bullying firmly on the agenda including the Government, schools and the Equality and Human Rights Commission. He went on to welcome and applaud the launch of EACH’s Online Reporting facility and urged businesses and the public sector alike to support it in every way possible.

The Online Reporting Service builds on EACH’s freephone UK-wide telephone support service, which has run successfully since 2003. The award-winning charity is introducing this new, dedicated online reporting service to provide better access to support for young people who are the targets of homophobic bullying. This addition to EACH’s services will also improve the charity’s understanding of the scale and nature of such bullying.

Jonathan Charlesworth, EACH’s Executive Director said:

“We are delighted to have augmented our freephone Actionline with an online reporting facility. EACH is eager to alert local education authorities and youth services across the UK to our enhanced service so that the opportunity to increase the reporting of homophobic bullying is maximised.â€
